Powering Remote Telecom Tower

In rural areas across the globe, telecom towers are essential for connecting millions of people with civil infrastructures and for accessing digital services. These telecom towers, typically of-grid sites, create extensive demand for energy commanding solid power infrastructure that can sustain and scale these ever-increasing power needs.

Typical existing solution for off-grid sites has been mainly based on generating AC power by on-site diesel generators. The main drawbacks of this solution is the continuous need for diesel to be supplied to these remote areas (in some places very expensive and risky) and generators maintenance that needs to be carried out at fixed intervals. 

Both drawbacks are minimized by adding green energy sources, mainly solar panels, and power storage capacity, sized in such a way to optimize the added CAPEX versus the saved OPEX.  In many countries in Africa, the trend of harvesting solar energy with some storage capacity is becoming more and more the solution of choice. 

WW, in 2019, there were about 325 thousand “bad-grid” and “off-grid” sites, about 70 thousand of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. Some other off-grid sites, such as train signalling are candidates for similar solutions.
